Best Image Size - Sierra Site Design

Hi,

I'm in the process of switching over to the Sierra design for my Site.

I picked one of my photos for the cover page, but the quality looks a little less than desirable. I'm wondering if it is getting stretched, etc.

Is there an image size that would work best for this?

Also, I liked how on the default settings the opacity of the top area where the title and links were was a bit darker than the rest of the page. Somehow, I lost that and the opacity is now uniform. Anyone know where that setting is so I can get it back?
