I went to my local camera store today looking for a good lens to shoot weddings and everyday portaits with. The guy told me that this lens is a must-have. He said that the background blur is great, which was one of the things I was looking for. It was a little over $300.

Can anyone offer any other benefits of this lens? Good for weddings? Indoor photography?

I have a Canon 20D and a Digital Rebel.

Any help would be great.

Thank you.

brian

It's my most used lens. Great for portraits, low light, super sharp! I can't say enough about it.

I have the same bodies as you and that lens. It is SUPER, good build, light weight and a must have. I have never heard anyone say anything bad about it. You will not regret getting it. I use it anyplace I am close enough, sports ( fantastic in low light, inside or out) candids, portraits and products.

    I hope this helps.

It's a fantastic low light lens that has great bokeh and is very sharp at 2.0 and up. Think about 85mm on a 20D. So it may be not be wide enough indoors, but it's still very usable. I've used it for aquarium shots with good results. It's a very good prime to complement the 85 1.8

It's a great lens. I use it with the 20D and I really like it. I'm still learning to control DOF when shooting with fast apertures though. Here are some examples:

    cool stuff every body
ok, now I'm getting excitedmwink.gif I took advantage of the Canon rebates and this was the 3rd item I picked up (along w/ a 20D and the 100-400 L lens for my soccer shots). Just got it about a week or so ago, but still really need to put it through its paces. (although I'm not hoping to get anything as good as what you guys have posted - at least not yet)

    thanks for the inspirationclap.gif

It has been rainy here so I haven't had a chance to shoot much with it, but here is my very first shot. I must say, I am already very impressed with the lens, even though I have barely done anything with it.

No flash, just available light inside my house.

is the 50 mm 1.4 really that much better than the 50 mm 1.8? Does a .4 difference justify a $200 price difference?

It's not the speed that justifies the difference in price, it's the quality of the lens.

    See for yourself.
