I know they over winter as 'pillars before turning to moths in the warmer months, but this one was pretty active tonight, but it stayed still long enough for me to get a close up with 3 extension tubes on the 100mm.

Could be one of the underwings, yellow or orange, or a cutworm, not too sure to be honest.

It looked very much like one of the Yellow Underwings but the pale marks on the face were wrong. A very common species but a very photogenic face.
