Ok, I don't know why this is so hard for me - I'm sure I'm missing something basic - but I cannot seem to create a page and then drag and drop in a text box. I also need to have a link on the home page for the about page - why can't I do this?

I'm sure you're not an idiot. :) First, go to the organizer to create a page in your desired location. Then click on the page and exit the organizer. You will be taken to that page on your site. Then click customize > content and design. From "Add content blocks" you can then drag content blocks to that page. This help page explains the whole process in detail:
    http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/1210637

To link to that page from the menu, you need to add it in the menu content block as described here:

It will be much easier for Dgrinners to help you if you add a link to your site to your signature so they can actually see your site - just click the clipboard in the upper right > edit signature.

I am having similar difficulties. Firstly, there is no option to create a page in the organizer...just "folder" or "gallery." Secondly, there is no "menu" contact block option under "navigation" in "add content blocks." Are these features available to Basic subscribers?

From the help page at http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/1210637-how-do-i-create-and-customize-pages-:
Creating pages are a feature of Power and higher accounts. Basic users will need to upgrade to create pages.
Pages and menus are both features for which you will need to upgrade to a minimum of a Power account.

It should be perfectly easy to create an about page using a gallery.
