Yes I think these are late emerging adults that hibernate if it gets too cold.

Was this using the handheld flash set up; and I presume it was done out doors?

In most of these shots, I'm holding the leaf or stem near the hoverfly and resting the camera lens on the same hand. This mechanically links the camera to the subject -This stabilises the system and makes fine focusing a lot easier (focus by moving the camera).
