Homepage "Background" - forced lower resolution?

Hi all - I did a search for "background" and "homepage" but could not identify an existing thread with resolution.

Why does the homepage image downgrade the resolution? I'm noticing that my homepage image is showing a considerable about of pixelation, even though the full-resolution image is public. I've attached an example.

My smugmug site (in progress) is here: http://jasonrodman.smugmug.com/
The image being used is available at "original" resolution.

Any ideas?

-Jason

For the background image, we won't use the full original image file, as that could cause seriously long page loading time if we are serving up a huge original image. So, we will use up to our largest display size X3, which is 1600 pixels max on the long side. Since a smaller display copy is used, you may see some slight artifacts when viewing on a very large monitor or very high resolution display.

Thanks for the quick response. Makes sense.

Are there any plans to adjust this in the future? Perhaps higher max pixels just for the main home page?

I don't know of any plans but you could upload a new version to an unlisted gallery separate from the one it's currently in and have the display settings different but again you will be dealing with longer page loading time depending on how big the file is and not everyone has or wants fast internet.
