Mini Challenge #199: Glass
Alans Grin
Registered Users Posts: 346 Major grins
The theme for this mini challenge is “Glass” – any photo in which the presence of glass is a major feature – This includes glass vessels/bowls etc, lamps, windows (church or otherwise), spectacles & lenses, greenhouses, glass covered skyscrapers etc etc. For the purpose of this theme mirrors will also be considered as glass.
I’m hoping to see a collection of photos celebrating glass in its many diverse forms and usage.
They don't have to be new images, but if you fancy doing some shooting for it then glass is a lovely subject to have a go at.
The competition will be closed at 10pm (France time) on 17th Jan.
Alan.
OUR UN-OFFICIAL GENERAL RULES
1. Have fun sharing and seeing what others share!
2. The host supplies a topic and YOU POST 1-3 IMAGES. The host judges the winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and is not eligible to enter. The 1st place winner becomes the next host, chooses the next topic and becomes the next judge.
3. Any photo you’ve taken is eligible, regardless of when taken or camera used.
4. Any amount of post-processing is allowed. However, it is helpful if you list your camera and lens along with your photo.
5. You may comment on other contestant's images. If you want someone to leave you some critique or criticism, just ask within your post.
6. The winner has up to three days (72 hours) to begin a new mini-challenge, or the honor goes to the #2 finisher and so forth.
Guidelines:
1. Enter 1-3 photos and put them in a single post.
2. Either embed your image in the thread or, if you must, supply a link to it. Keep in mind, however, most people don't want to click to open photos hosted elsewhere (i.e. on your website).
3. Also try and resize your photos prior to posting so they're sized appropriately for viewing without having to scroll (~800 pixels on the longest side works best.)
4. Give each image you enter a title.
5. Enjoy discussion with members about their images, don't let this just be an entry thread!
6. When quoting a post, change the IMG urls to a 200x200 size picture so it is clear your post is feedback and not another entry. (See here for help).
7. Don't be hesitant; share 'em and enter!
Mini-Challenge pointers:
1. Upon winning a mini-challenge round, your first step is coming up with a new theme and starting a new thread using the same format as others have used.
2. Make sure to notify the admin of this thread to update the main thread links with your entry thread.
3. Feel free to watch the thread as it grows or wait to the end time and look at all the entries all at once.
4. After the time/date has passed, then officially close the thread with a single post notifying everyone of the fact.
5. After you're finished judging, start a new thread (again using the prior formats) and post your Winner and runners-up. It is important to have runners up in case the winner does not show within the 72-hour window.
6. PM the winner with this info above and let them know they have 72 hours to set up the next mini-challenge.
7. If the winner does not show/start the next mini-challenge after 72 hours, notify the next runner-up and post a message on the Winner thread of the fact.
8. Remember, if you're the Winner, you run the next mini challenge!

Since I had a Chihuly in the last mini - here is the one I saw on the NCL Pearl Cruise ship in the atrium. It was hard to get a good angle on this as it was surrounded by metal poles.
Second when I think of glass, I think of mirrors. The ultimate mirror site is Versailles. Here is a selfie I took in the Hall of Mirrors in 1964 - Kodak slide film. (the mirrors obviously need cleaning so you can tell it isn't a 'bought' slide)
And last - here is a photo from the Waterford glass factory in Ireland - a glass worker with a blob of hot glass at the end of his pipe (glass furnace behind him). He's scratching his forehead (glass worker thinker?) This photo makes me smile although a man might not have the same reaction.
Maybe the last two are a little bit unexpected. I have a lot of photos of glasses of various types including chandeliers of glass, but others can do those photos better than I could.
Many, many thanks
Alan.

#1 - St Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Chinese Camp, Ca (one of California's designated ghost towns although there are a few residents year-round). View from the interior looking out to the graveyard next to the church. They were suppose to be restoring some of the buildings in Chinese Camp, but I haven't gotten back to see the progress. This church was on the slate for restoration.
#2 - A stained glass window from St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Jackson, Ca.
#3 - So that you wouldn't think that I am in a rut with church windows, this is a bumper-car ride at a country fair with lots of multi-colored glass bulbs.

Light is everything in life and photography.
My photo is from Ottawa 2009 - I think it's a bank building and they may have similar buildings in other places...<img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/6029383/emoji/ne_nau.gif" border="0" alt="" >
However, I remember having a similar photo taken in Halifax Nova Scotia
But if this is funny, even funnier is that I found this image in Pinterest with a little different details in the street and light - same place, same person, but another time:

The used match was vigorously tossed away because to light the wick
I had to hold the match almost vertically causing my fingers to
be burned.

Thank-you grandmaR and travelways - glad they caught your eye(s)!
You could have lighted another match and then blown it out before it burned you
1. Glass Marbles
2. Stained Glass in old church in Israel
3. Through The Glass Window
Easily solved by photographing a burned match and Photoshopping into
the image. It had to be placed somewhere where the blackened end
doesn't get lost in the black backgroud.
However, I really don't see it as an improvement. It's an arty shot, not
a documentary shot. And, it does seem wrong to leave the burned match
around. Normally it would be thrown away immediately.
