The bee has a pollen load in its pollen basket. The pollen is yellow, sealed with shiny propolis, the sticky exudate from "sticky buds", for which the maple scales leaves look strong candidates. "Propolis" means "in front of the city". The bees use it to make a kind of door mat at the hive entrance, where it forms an antiseptic barrier. It is also used to line comb cells and to fill small gaps in the comb. They may also use it to coat the body of a dead intruder, such as a mouse.
