Thanks guys. These clouds are formed by large jets passing through lower level strata. The air rushing over the wings of the planes causes the air to rapidly cool and expand. The result is ice and snow. This image was take from our house....about 60 miles from the San Francisco & Oakland airports......just about where many of these planes begin their decent from crusing altitude. This also brings to mind the movie "The Day After Tomorrow" when they had the storms that ended up going into another ice age.

Great shot, never seen that before! I saw an almost perfect square hole of blue sky in a grey sky though once! Wonder what caused that?
