Paul - for feeding hoverflies like this I use between 2 to 5 shots depending on the angle and the magnification.
I shoot F11 when at 1:1 to 2:1 (using a FF camera which allows me to use around 1 stop smaller aperture to get the same DOF/diffraction ratio as a crop camera) and around F8 at 4:1.

When you focus stack live (and no doubt lively) insects, how many frames? At I assume at around f/11?
