Mini Challenge #203 - Lighthouses

Lighthouses are one of my favorite things to take photos of, but I'm usually taking them from a bouncing boat. I've also done quite a few paintings of lighthouses including some screen painting (painting on a window screen which is a Baltimore craft - you can see out, but not in). This is one I did on the porthole screen of our boat

1043790-Painting_of_the_Old_Point_Comfort_light-Hampton.jpg

Topic includes photos of lighthouses, photos FROM lighthouses, photos of the lighthouse interiors and photos of Fresnel lenses.

Lighthouse lens (but not a very good photo)

100_6676a.JPG

It would be OK to have photos of ATONs (Aids TO Navigation) like these channel markers from Bermuda

48096.jpg

I'd prefer actual lighthouses rather than lighthouse lawn ornaments or faux lighthouses like the one on Hilton Head. Don't give me a photo of that pretender lighthouse as I hate it.

x100_8231.JPG

This is a fake lighthouse which is rather nice as it doesn't pretend to be real

x756362-001.jpg

Lighthouses that I haven't seen will be particularly valued and I have seen a lot on the East Coast of the US, but if you have a good one of one I've seen - that will be good too

This challenge will run for a tad over 2 weeks - from today until March 30th. That's because I'm leaving on a 10 day trip to England on Sunday the 15th and won't be back until the 26th. I don't expect to be back in the world until at least the 30th.

################################################## ##########################
OUR UN-OFFICIAL GENERAL RULES
1. Have fun sharing and seeing what others share!
2. The host supplies a topic and YOU POST 1-3 IMAGES. The host judges the winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and is not eligible to enter. The 1st place winner becomes the next host, chooses the next topic and becomes the next judge.
3. Any photo you’ve taken is eligible, regardless of when taken or camera used.
4. Any amount of post-processing is allowed. However, it is helpful if you list your camera and lens along with your photo.
5. You may comment on other contestant's images. If you want someone to leave you some critique or criticism, just ask within your post.
6. The winner has up to three days (72 hours) to begin a new mini-challenge, or the honor goes to the #2 finisher and so forth.

Guidelines:
1. Enter 1-3 photos and put them in a single post.
2. Either embed your image in the thread or, if you must, supply a link to it. Keep in mind, however, most people don't want to click to open photos hosted elsewhere (i.e. on your website).
3. Also try and resize your photos prior to posting so they're sized appropriately for viewing without having to scroll (~800 pixels on the longest side works best.)
4. Give each image you enter a title.
5. Enjoy discussion with members about their images, don't let this just be an entry thread!
6. When quoting a post, change the IMG urls to a 200x200 size picture so it is clear your post is feedback and not another entry. (See here for help).
7. Don't be hesitant; share 'em and enter!

Mini-Challenge pointers:
1. Upon winning a mini-challenge round, your first step is coming up with a new theme and starting a new thread using the same format as others have used.
2. Make sure to notify the admin of this thread to update the main thread links with your entry thread.
3. Feel free to watch the thread as it grows or wait to the end time and look at all the entries all at once.
4. After the time/date has passed, then officially close the thread with a single post notifying everyone of the fact.
5. After you're finished judging, start a new thread (again using the prior formats) and post your Winner and runners-up. It is important to have runners up in case the winner does not show within the 72-hour window.
6. PM the winner with this info above and let them know they have 72 hours to set up the next mini-challenge.
7. If the winner does not show/start the next mini-challenge after 72 hours, notify the next runner-up and post a message on the Winner thread of the fact.
8. Remember, if you're the Winner, you run the next mini challenge!

I'll start you off. These photos are of the Ponce de Leon Inlet
lighthouse on the east coast of Florida. It is the tallest lighthouse
in the state at 175'. It was built in 1835.

#1 I have this photo labeled under "Jobs I would never take".
The men on the scaffold are pressure washing the entire outside
of the lighthouse. The scaffold was blowing around in the wind,
and one of the workers is pushing off with his foot so the scaffold
won't get banged against the side.

    i-KFpdSmC-XL.jpg

#2 - View from the bottom looking up. I placed my camera on the
floor and used the remote to trip the shutter.

    i-843PFh8-XL.jpg

#3 - View from the top looking down - This one had to work. There's no way
I would climb those 203 narrow and steep steps again to re-take the photo.

We visited Ponce but did not go up the lighthouse - I just can't do the steps anymore. LOVE the one looking up. Lighthouses are SO COOL when you look up inside them.

If I did the rigging myself, I don't think that job would be too bad. But I did go to a scaffolding place once (they were showing us how things should be done) and found that they put a rope through a thimble instead of around it like it should be - putting it through would put the strain on the weakest point. (And they didn't do it on purpose so that we could spot the mistake) I wouldn't want the job of painting the inside of a water tower though.

Any kind of aid to navigation will do - buoy, range, lighthouse trash can, lighthouse on someone's lawn. Lighthouse Liquores sign.

    • Half Moon Shoal replica (1998), Texas City, is a visitor center; it is not a faithful replication of the original lighthouse. The building has panels with maps and the nautical history of the area. J. Scott Ryder has a closeup photo, and Google has a satellite view. Located on the levee walk about 1/2 mile (800 m) north of the Texas City Dike.
    • Stow-a-Way Marina (Lake Conroe), about 6 mi (10 km ) north of the well-known Harbour Town lighthouse, has a functioning light, but it does not serve as an aid to navigation. Google has an aerial view. ARLHS USA-1211.

I'm waaaayyyy to far inland to see any of those Texas lighthouses (though the one on Lake Buchanan isn't that far), but thanks for the link. I have seen the Bolivar lighthouse years ago, but I don't think I had a camera at the time.

Somewhere in a box in my house are some vacation pictures we took from our Minnesota vacation back in the pre-digital days. I know I have a few pics of Split Rock Lighthouse on Lake Superior. That was cool, but I don't know if I can find them before the deadline. That is really the only lighthouse I have ever taken pictures of. We rarely ever get to the coast or any body of water that might have a lighthouse. We are land-lubbers, lol.

    Thanks for the comment.

It's a good theme for me. There are 30 lighthouses still standing in Florida,
but it's over 800 miles from the one in Pensacola to the one in Key West.
Even further is the one in the Dry Tortugas, but that's only available by
    boat.

It's like asking you for a photograph of an oil derrick.

Ok, I am a bit excited (if not a little embarrassed, lol). I found a lighthouse pic! Ok, not a great one I admit, but I found one that I was unaware that I even had.

A few years ago, we visited my brother-in-law in Washington DC. On one of our excursions, we visited Mount Vernon and rode the boat up the Potomac. Almost directly across from Mount Vernon is Fort Washington....and the Fort Washington Lighthouse!!

    Fort Washington Lighthouse
    P6079426-L.jpg

Here's some info about the fort and the lighthouse itself: http://www.lighthousefriends.com/light.asp?ID=438

Anyhoo, I ran across this pic while looking for another pic from this trip. I really didn't know I had a lighthouse pic. So I was pretty happy to find this even if it isn't the greatest shot I've ever taken. Ya know, sometimes it's just the little things that make you smile.

Well it is a lighthouse I have never seen and it is right in my 'neighborhood'. So from that perspective it is PERFECT.

It's nice to see the west coast lighthouses and also Maine, where I haven't been since I was almost 19 (summer of 1956). And also of course Alan's Grin's one in Greece. I'm really going to have a hard time judging

Your photo explains the thing hanging off the back in Alan's shot - the boat is Med-moored. That is to save dock space, they back up to the dock and embark or disembark from the stern - there is an anchor off the front to keep the boat aligned properly. We have never done a Med-moor and hope we don't ever have to. It's bad enough just doing a regular docking.

I love lighthouses....great photos here so far! I didn't enter the last contest because we were traveling....to Oregon! The famous MN lighthouse is this one (Split Rock Lighthouse near Two Harbors):
    #1
    splitrock-L.jpg

While in Oregon, one of my goals was to find and re-shoot these two lighthouses, as the last time we were there I was just learning HDR and got carried away; and since I've lost the original files, wanted fresh photos to play with. Unfortunately, one lighthouse was under a tarp for renovations, and I don't even know which the other photo is...does anyone know? We drove the length of the entire Oregon coast, and saw several others, but each time we hiked up, over the hill, I was disappointed by what came into view. Should have done more research ahead of time, I guess. These are both Oregon lighthouses, taken several years ago:

Love the photos of Pigeon Point Lighthouse posted by Prevailing Conditions! Ironically, this is the one lighthouse I was able to visit recently. We were in Palo Alto, California for a weekend and had a little free time. When I saw that there was a lighthouse within reach, we set out for a our destination on a lovely Sunday afternoon. Wish we had more time there but it was fun to see.
