Blood Moon

On a sudden whim, I decided to get up at 3am and drive 63 miles to San Francisco to photograph the so called, "blood moon", lunar eclipse. The eclipse was at 5am, and the moonset was at 7am. Here is the moonset first.

This last one is really strange. Evidently there was a fog line on the horizon that was exactly at the same level as the bridge which obscured the bottom of the moon. It's not faked, I would have done a better job if it were.

#7 Blood Moon at 5am. This is at totality, or as close as it got.

Comments are welcome and thanks for looking.

Really cool! I would have suspected Photoshop at work in the sixth if you hadn't told us otherwise.

Very nice images, Joel. Hope you got some sleep after all that.

That's some really good stuff, Joel. Well worth the early morning foray.

I always wanted to lie naked on a bearskin rug in front of a fireplace. Cracker Barrel didn't take kindly to it.

Thanks, man! Mercy is what I had in mind when I didn't text you late at night when I decided to go. Sorry my schedule has been so hectic. Maybe we can shoot some of this weather that's rolling in over the next few days.

Thanks, Don. Yeah, it's crazy. There may be a very slight color gradient under the bridge showing through where the moon should be, but that's about it.

Thanks, David. Somehow I managed to stay up all day. I slept well last night though! :snore

Thank you, Richard. Yeah, the fog is always a real crap shoot.

Thanks you, sir! The fog report at the bridge was kind of iffy, so I got lucky on these for sure.

Well -- You should be expecting a call from a magazine soon. I mean...this is awesome. All are unique. Curious... were there many other photogs where you were?

Thanks, Anna Maria! You're too kind. There were just a couple of other photographers on the island that I could see at 5am totality. However, by sunrise a pretty sizable contingent showed up around 7am for the moonset. Most of them collected in one area and I suspect it was probably a club of some kind. I was all by myself about 100 yards away from them wondering if they knew something I didn't. lol3.gif

But yes, it's pretty hard to have an original thought in such a large city. Still though, I haven't seen anybody elses shots showing up anywhere.

You set out at 3am, not knowing if it'll be worth it. And boy was it. 1, 4 and of course 6 are my favs.
