YUP I've come to the dark side.
Haven't been overly happy with my past Canon boxes so......
10D.....20D had both didn't seem all that great for focus....batt life.
I was using good Sigma glass with them.
(Even the Wifes Canon P&S gobbles batts like a piranha!)
Circumstances arose that I had to sell off my DSLR goods in 2007.
Went to a Nikon Coolpix P7700 for the past 3yrs and have loved it!! :lust
So I was able to rustle some dinero together and got the D5300 + 18-55mm.
Can't tell you how much I've missed having a DSLR!!
As I had posted earlier I believe it to be grey stock but seems to work just fine.
Was in OEM box and packaging so not really sure how to tell grey stock.
It is what it is.....I'm sure I'm not the only one here to do this.
Wish I could afford higher end like a 7100 or the like but it's all good.
But this D5300 is the bottom of the stack and has some great features.
Absolutely love the articulating screen....man is that handy for low angle and over head shots!!!
*Personal opinion More expensive don't make better pics....person behind the box does.
So far the only thing I don't like about it is it does a double slap of the shutter in LV.
Dunno if it's a setting I have wrong or that's the way it is?
Soon as I can I wanna get the 55-300mm.
Really like to get some Sigma glass again but I've been told this D5300 can only work with AF-S glass.
Not sure if Sigma would even work properly with this?
Maybe I can get some answers to some of my questions from other Nikonians here.
I'm sure there will be some scolding from my past Canon conrads. :rolleyes

Wonderful Sony 24.2 MP imager in it, and the Nikon EXPEED 4 image processor helps produce lovely JPG images even into high-ISOs.
It lacks an AF "Screw-Drive", so Nikon AF-D lenses (and third-party lenses without a BIM*) are manual focus. Sigma and Tamron lenses with a BIM* should work fine.
I would recommend a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II LD Aspherical or Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II VC LD Aspherical (IF) (with optical image stabilization) as a standard zoom. Often available used through KEH, Adorama and B&H, they are a better value than similar Nikon DX lenses (constant f2.8 aperture standard zoom), and still manage excellent image sharpness. The f2.8 aperture is important to maintain better low-light AF performance.
*(BIM = Built-In Motor, similar to Nikon AF-S)

My Camera is NOT Grey Stock!
Nikon has been having trouble with their site.
I have been trying to do a Firmware UD for my P7700.
I called customer service and while I was on with them.....
Registered BOTH my D5300 and the 18-55mm it came with USA ligit Equipment!!

Anything from Sigma with HSM after it should work too. Not sure what the Tamron equivalent is... USD maybe?
