focus!

I have a canon eod 30 d with a 18-200mm efs f 5.6 lens.lately I have ben shooting birds at 20-30' away.focus is a real problem wether I am in manual mode or automatic mode.i tried f8,f11,f16,mf ,af Is off Is on etc.i almays use a tripod and try to keep the shutter speed fast.i also happened to shoot some buildings and they were out of focus.....the camera has served me well for 8 years and I never had this problem before.thanks
