A rather flashy hoverfly

First sightings this year of the rather flashy hoverfly Xanthogramma pedissequum. An interesting hoverfly, the larvae lives inside ant's nests (I found out about this by twice photographing newly emerged ones and then finding I was sitting on an ant's nest which I thought was a bit of a coincidence). First 5 shots natural light. Last shot full flash.

    Brian,

Lovely set. I get the occasional individual in my garden, where there are ants nests.

Occasionally, in the ant highways (open-topped tunnels) you might see the white springtail Cyphoderus running with the ants. The genus lives only in ant colonies.
