Yesterday I had my camera and macro lenses packed away in my camera bag, ready for an imminent visit to some local gardens which were open to raise funds for a charity. Minutes before our planned departure, my wife came in from the garden, describing a beetle which sounded like the first sighting in our garden of the asparagus beetle.

On arriving at our sparse shoots of asparagus, I found two beetles moving around the tip of the shoot, occasionally stopping and mating. This was at about my knee height, with no hope of support to steady the camera.

I had taken my camera, with the Kiron 105mm and twin flash in place and took some shots at f11. I then decided to fetch my Printing Nikkor 105mm, on its extension to give 1:1 at the sensor, its optimum magnification. I took a number of shots with the Nikkor. Although the first set were OK, the Nikkor ones were markedly better and are the only ones posted here, all but one cropped for composition. They do not include one of the mating.

I have moderated the highlights in the fourth one but they are still not as I would prefer.

An asparagus tip: keep these beetles off your asparagus tip. biggrin.gif
