Using a sling on a 70-200 lens

So I've just splashed out on a Nikon 70-200 (which I'm pretty excited to have! :clap ) but given the weight have been reconsidering strap options.

In particular, my question is: Can you use the screw mount that is under the tripod foot, as shown in the picture below:

It is the standard thread size so I could mount my Peak Designs Slide sling there... but there is no mention in the manual about using it. Given the weight, and the price of the lens, I'm reluctant to do anything I shouldn't!

As to leaving the tripod foot on, I'll rarely, if ever, be using a tripod but I will frequently need to be packing the camera and lens in a rucksack with other kit, and that foot really gets in the way, especially if you're not using it!
