SmugMug Gallery Style: Whitespace vs. Thumbnail Size

Using SmugMug gallery style. I'm struggling with the balance between thumbnail size and the number of thumbnails that appear on each page. When I set thumbnail size to "Auto," the thumbnail block makes excellent use of the space, stretching nicely as the browser window changes. But it frequently creates thumbnails that are way too small to see. It's also unpredictable: I can browse back and forth from the same page in the gallery, and the number of thumbnails and size of the thumbnails will differ each time.

When I set thumbnail size to "small," the thumbnail size is good, but the number of thumbnails is small (usually 4 or 8), with lots of unused space on the left and right. The attached snapshot is a good example of this. On the same browser and same window size, Old Smug nicely shows 16 thumbnails, while New Smug only shows 8. All of the images are nearly the same size between old and new, too. The only difference is all that whitespace.

What am I missing?
