Nikon D5300 "Subject is too dark" override

Hi,
I finally made my purchase of a Nikon D5300 with the 18-140 kit lense. I researched the proper methods to shoot fireworks so I thought I would give it a try. Basically I was in Manual Mode, F8 (tried all fstops), Iso100, in Bulb Mode. I was using my phone as a wireless remote release (which I figured out is a bit too slow for this).
The problem I ran in to was where the fireworks were being shot was a pretty dark background. So when the fireworks would go off I would hit the shutter to open and the camera would give the "Subject too dark" error. I didn't think this would happen in Manual mode. Is there a setting I could have done to over-ride this error.
I worked around it by waiting for the fireworks to go off and then hit the shutter, which worked sometimes, sometimes not. I wasn't able to catch the shots I wanted that's for sure.
It just doesn't make sense to me for the camera to put up this error in a long exposure mode.
Thanks for any help or advice,
Dan

I suggest a fixed 3 seconds, f8 and ISO 100.

Thanks! I don't remember disabling it so I would guess you are correct! Nice shot! I will try the fixed duration next time too.
