This Moth Greeted Me

Leaving my office, I was startled to see this huge moth on the stairs, fully 5 inch wingspan! I grabbed some shots with my iPhone, and came back the next day with heavy artillery, my Sigma 50-150 (not macro) on my Canon 70D body. This is an Antheraea polyphemus, male (bushy antennae for detecting pheromones of unmated females). He stayed a couple of days and then was gone. I have seen one of these at the butterfly house at Callaway Gardens (Georgia) years ago, but this is my first sighting in the wild (because, yes, my office stairs are so wild!).

Beautiful, Carter! Thanks for posting the set. Second shot is my favorite.

#2 and #3 both have nice detail; #4 give a bit of a sense of scale. I think if I encountered an insect as big as a bird, I'd just try to get the hell out and not worry about the pics lol3.gif.

Thank you all. I was truly fortunate to come across this little(?) guy (#4). And more so when he was there the second day when I came back with my big camera for pics #1-3. I felt bold and touched him with my pen (yes, that's really bold I know). So he displayed his back wings with the bigger eye markings. It was fascinating, and again, I felt so very fortunate.
