Necklace Ground Beetle Carabus monilis

I don't normally feature dead insects but this is a particularly attractive one. It is not supposed to be around after July but I found it on the ground in the second week of September.

Lighting can be tricky for metallic-looking subjects. I noted that it looked best in diffused daylight from overhead. I tried to approximate to this by bouncing my flash off a vertical white board on my left.

The background was some pale cloth.

This is one of the larger species, almost an inch (25mm) long.
