Tunicates

This is one of the most unusual pictures I have lately taken underwater: A row of pelagic (free-swimming) tunicates, in mid-water off Pescador island, Philippines. These are filter-feeding animals, like jellyfish, but evolutionarily unrelated to them. After adjusting the brightness of the image and minor backscatter removal, the tunicates look as if sprung from HR Giger's mind. The structure in the middle of the animals' bodies really stands out, and makes the photograph look oddly 3-dimensional. I used a side/back lighting technique of strobe placement to get the image of these translucent organisms.
