Index numbers in non-SmugMug style galleries

Has anyone figured out an easy way to add index numbers to pics in thumbnail or collage gallery styles? Or in the lightbox? My old site uses SmugMug style and I'm used to communicating with visitors by referring to the index number of a pic in the gallery. More often than not, my pics do not have captions and the file names are long and ugly. Manually maintaining numbers in captions is out of the question.

You might try this customization - http://origin.sherlockphotography.org/Customisations/Number-thumbs.

Based on the explanation the number shows only over the thumb or collage image but doesn't show in the lightbox. That may or may not help you.

Cheers, Denise. Looks like just the sort of thing I'm looking for. I'll check it out.

Edit: Works fine in thumb and collage style, but does not affect the lightbox. Better than nothing, but no cigar.
