I'm thinking about purchasing a set of Alien bee lights.
Anyone have any qualms against them?

Or does anyone have any suggestions as to other lights?

Also, what is the recycling time of the lights specifically the 800W.

I just want durable, affordablle, quality lights under 800-1000 dollars.

I have owned mine for a year and so far I have had no issues...

It really depends on your needs. I know others have Elinchrom, Speedotron and White Lightning. You mentioned in the original post that portability was something that you were looking for. Extra speedlights can do as well although again it depends on your needs...

The B800 have a recycle time of 1s when used at 100% (I almost never use the B800 at 100% so the recycle time is quicker).

I have 3 AB 800's and I love them. The service is really good too. I am new to strobes and they were very helpful when I had questions about how to use them and what I needed.

I take them around a bit and they seem to really hold up.

I can't shoot fast enough to run into the recycle time. But I barely ever use that at higher than quarter power.

    Have fun!
