Is the "Customize" "button" (it's just the word, not really a button) at the top of a gallery going to affect only that particular gallery we're in, or more than that? (It'd be handy if that info... how far any changes are going to flow) would be in a hover, but nope... nada. I couldn't even start making one change, because I had to fear it would change my site.

It depends what option you choose within customize.

Go ahead and click to see what each option does.

Keep in mind that while you are in the process of moving to new smug no one can see your site changes except you and smugmug staff.

I feel like you are frozen in a mode of being afraid to experiment, asking questions here instead of working on your site. It should not take long for you to have a working and good looking new smugmug site. As I mentioned to you before, I went from a highly code-customized site in legacy to using very little code in new smug. I spent several hours playing, then took about an hour to get the site looking as it does now. Once I published my new smug site it took me several more hours to edit each gallery description to remove the HTML breadcrumb I had placed there in old smug to keep viewers away from the standard category and subcategory screens (with the much too tiny thumbnails). Your site doesn't have that type of customization to be undone - I honestly believe you should be able to convert in a short amount of time once you start experimenting.

The clock is ticking. You waited till the last minute to build your new site. Start pushing all the buttons and see what happens because you've got a lot to learn in a short time! :D

Go into the customizer (customize -> content and design) , start playing, and if you don't like what happens you can just discard your changes.
