Have always found these a complete bugger to photograph - finally found one who I think got a bit deer in the headlights of the ring LED and allowed me to pick and choose how to shoot him.

E-P5 / Tokina AT-X 90mm F/2.5 / Raynox 150 and 250

Thanks! I barely even bothered with that one because my flash diffuser started falling apart and had to be held together in one hand while I shot with the other - only shot it about 4 times and I was totally sure I was burning the hell out of the front face of the fly and gave up. Only even saw that there were water droplets lensing the the flash when I got home and viewed it full size - at this point, totally sure looking at the contained jpg in the .orf raws that those were totally cooked. Load into lightroom .. not one of them maxed out to orange blinkies. Very lucky :D
    Wonderful series.

    Thank you!

Thank you! That crane fly is the biggest one I've ever seen and it was very comfortable to shoot indeed.

    Thanks!

The spiders were so small I had difficulty even knowing what it was when I was shooting it - actually last night I was stoked to find two more spiders on some westringa flowers, shot 'em, found they were... exactly the same spider as that one. Ha.

I think it's a soldier fly too but I'm not sure what kind. That's one of those ones where an absolute tonne of photos were taken of a thing and the end result was decent but not amazingly impressive - there were a few dozen much worse ones. Something about the metallic hairs and their propensity to glow under the flash plus it being really low and tightly gripping the leaf made it really difficult to get an exposure that didn't look like a flash shot of a disco ball. Mainly picked that one because you could see the little pollen grains on it at least :D
