You can imagine trying to stitch 2 shots from the 10-22mm canon @ 10mm. So is there a formula ?

Can a full frame do it without distortion woes from @ 16mm ?

Take a look athis link [http://www.prairievistas.com/cur/genpano1.shtml ]....John Morrison, I am told will shoot upto 14 shot to make a pano....actually I saw a non pano that supposedly had 14 exposures end to end to make it and it was just under 24 X 36.....it was an odd size and I helped the buyer make a custome walnut frame for it....here is the pic....link : http://www.prairievistas.com/cur/whitehorseredbarn.shtml

He has an email link on his site he may be good enuff to answer your questions.....
