Harold, It's got to be something a bit unique about the eye structure of these and related bugs such as mantid flies. I can only assume the light source is being reflected back after going through some surface pigment but the hexagon cells are also leaking some light through their sides (the complementary colour I think) to form the arms.

An interesting effect, which I have seen before. It can't be as simple as the light hitting the eye at one, narrow angle.
