While driving today, I spotted this action at a very busy intersection near the local mall.

Oh yes, I should add, the crow gave up and left. The hawk remained another 10 minutes and then went on his way.

Maybe I can help here. The Accipiters, while birders, aka tailers, are about the same size and in some ways almost are, notice the almost, competitors. RT's while certainly big enough to take a crow are not air hunters, branch potatoes are a fond term:D and they hunt small mammals, killing by brute force. Crows are also rather nasty pack birds. So it all boils down to territory and natural food. Simple explanation.

Two years ago we got called out on a downed first year Coop, crows litterally knocked this guy out of the air. Unfortunatly his wing was damaged beyond repair.

    Spell check would be niceumph.gif

what appeals to me is the combination of the wildness of the birds, and the contrast with the ordinary, every day light pole.......how we mix nature and civilization. very nice shots.

crows and even a crow ' a kestrel will chase a hawk away and small birds will chase away a crow dive bombing from the top and they chase them away because they are afraid of them or just do not like to share
