An image from Saturday night's Providence Roller Derby's home championship bout.

In a dark arena, I shot the first bout using available light and was operating at ISO 8000 to 10000. For the championship bout I added a few speed lights (bounced of the high ceiling) and brought the ISO down 4000 which is good enough for the team's requirements.

If you would like to see some more shots I have added some to my blog.

I looked at your blog post. I think if I were shooting in this situation with almost no light, I'd use direct off-camera flash and try for a strobist style. Looks like you've tried to illuminate the whole rink with ISO and bounce flash and I think the results are not as dramatic as this awesome sport can look.

An "accurate" reproduction of a scene and a good photograph are often two different things.
