Help - old lenses for A1's, new Rebel XT
Hello everyone,
I've been a member of Dgrin for a while, but I look more than I post. Trying to change that though - entered my first challenge #54 - Peace, my entry was "Winter on the Farm" - check it out if you want http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=24043&page=2.
Anyways, I have been drooling for over a year now over a DSLR. I have always been a canon lover since my first good quality snapshot camera around age 10 (Shurshot?). So its a no-brainer for me, MUST HAVE THE REBEL XT.
Here's my problem: My dad gave me his old camera equipment. 2 Canon A1 bodies (see pictures), and several nice lenses (see pic of some of them).
One of the biggest motivators for me to get a Rebel XT has been that I thought I could look forward to using my dad's lenses with the new camera.
Recently, I was told (while drooling over new camera in store) that my dad's old lenses will not work with the new camera because the lenses are not auto focus. Is this true??? I am heart broken if so.
I don't know a lot about SLR cameras or lenses, so I need some advice. I think I will get the Rebel XT either way, but I was thinking of selling the old A1's to help pay for the new camera. Now I am questioning that and considering keeping the old cameras as well. But if I do, it will take me longer to save money to buy the new one.
Any help would be appreciated
Mike

The simple answer is the old lenses you father passed down to you will not work on the newer canon bodies. The old lenses as FD mount where as newer lenses are EF and EF-S mount.
For some reason I'm thinking you can get an adaptor to use the old FD mount but only in manual focus and some other down falls. Check out this link for some more details:

It's better to be hated for who you are than to be loved for who you're not.

You *can* get the adaptor. I bought one for a customer of mine who had a 400mm f/8 telephoto and a 2x teleconverter.
The catch is, the adapter is 1.25x, and teh crop factor is 1.6x
Do the math ^_^
400mm * 2 = 800mm * 1.25 = 1000mm * 1.6 = 1600mm. - 3 stops (one per teleconversion) = f/22
Equals... Dark supertelephoto
Hard as hell to shoot with (except in bright daylight), but fun nonetheless, and had issues with focussing range. (probably due to all of the adapters.)
