I am not totally sure of the species identity but it fits the size (8mm) etc.
This was on the leaf of a very late potato plant at 7.30 this morning. It was not much above ground level so I (unusually) used the tipping rear screen. The fly seemed agitated, and kept changing position. I got one shot then it flew away.
EM-1 (manual mode, 1/160), extension, Printing Nikkor 105mm at f11, one flash on L-bracket aimed +/- along the lens axis, one in my right hand.
The frame has been cropped by about a third.

Thanks, Brian.
That is consistent with my first impressions, of a gnat of some sort.
