Cramp Balls Daldinia concentrica

Also known as King Alfred's Cakes because of the deep black colour of the ripe fruiting bodies, this fungus grows on fallen trees. I decided that images of the partly-ripe ones would show more detail than would the black ones.

These are two individual ones and an extensive colony.

This species (there are others) is mostly found on Ash Fraxinus
