In July there was an abundance of Harlequin Ladybird beetle pupae on leaves in my garden. They are quite colourful when freshly formed.

EM-1, extension, Printing Nikkor 105mm, f11, flash, hand-held.

All have been cropped.

Looks good! I remember when I came across a bunch of these in my yard (yellow and black ones) - spent ages trying to work out how people were getting such excellent shots of them when I was really sweating it trying to get anything good at 1x - was down to like 2.55x and cropping that for some of them. Only later found out the size of their larvae/pupa is pretty much directly related to how much they get to eat and mine were incredibly tiny for lack of aphids/whatever else they were looking for :D

    Thanks,

These were shot at 1:1 at the sensor, 2:1 with m4/3 crop. I further cropped them to about 4:1.

Food supply will determine the size but I have yet to encounter a shortage of aphids in my garden. This species is far from aphid-specific and will eat e.g. all kinds of beetle larvae, including those of ladybirds.
