OK, this has to be the mother of all special effect filters:

It was a simple cityscape (Millennium Park, Chicago) processed by Deep Dream, an experiment developed by Google--artificial intelligence on acid. It has been all over the press today, but the best explanation I've found so far was on Slate. You can upload your own images to Google's Deep Dream Generator here: http://deepdreamgenerator.com/

Warning: highly addictive; don't even think of getting anything else done today. :wink

    I wouldn't know how to create this even if I tried for not just a day but whole year.
    I however am not fan of Google.....they are DARPA operation collecting info on mankind....creating predictive models to controls us this is their obvious attempt to dive into our psyche.....because credit card usage....and other goodies are not enough......

    All credit goes to the Google Overlords, not to me. There is nothing the user can control--you just upload an image to the Dream Generator and it trips out and sends you what it imagined. The current version seems to have a fondness for eyes and strange animals.

    The under the hood stuff is really quite fascinating, but you need to understand the basics of machine learning and pattern recognition, which aren't easy. You don't have to know how it works to use it, however.

    These deep dreams are quite odd - I'm glad I don't see these images in my sleep.

    Cool. Was the large, two-headed animal on the right another plane? I like how the runway marker became some sort of insect.

    It wasn't, it looks like that morphed from some background houses.

    Just played around a little more. It seems that the more abstract the image is, the more "imaginative" the results. Here are two images that were completely synthesized in PS. The first used filter->render->clouds. The second is just non-uniform Gaussian noise (200%).

    I like the second one best. Nice imagery there.

    I tried like ten different ones and didn't like them very much... this one I like!
    Results seem to really depend on starting image... it's pretty fun though!

    It's a great algorithm - whoever developed it was a gifted person, without doubt :)
    ... and it's not randomly - I tried the same picture twice and got exactly the same result.

    I was trying to figure out what kind of pictures work better: sometimes you need more elements in focus, I think.
    I see that pictures with no sky are also doing better...
