There's snow in them thar hills

Finally, California is getting some wet weather and much-needed snow in the Sierra Nevada foothills and mountains. These shots were taken at the South Fork of the Yuba River (along old Highway 40 near Cisco Grove). It was about 1pm and still only 27 degrees - cold for California.

I'm not ready for snow but I'm always happy to see it in someone else's photos!

I love the first shot, it's a wonderful combination of water and snow and ice.

Really like #1, it would make a nice Christmas card. Seems like the West Coast has come out of the drought at least for this year. We are getting lots of snow in the mountains in Washington as well ( and lots of rain in the lowlands).

Very nice, Jo. Nice job of proper expose for snow, especially in the first one. For kicks, I cropped the first one from the top....just enough to eliminate the far snow in the distance. The result was somewhat of a quasi pano shot. Either way, it's a great shot.

BTW, I've been patiently waiting for snow here in North Florida....it's only been 35 years since the last episode.

Thanks Tom. Interestingly, I did crop the shot a little from the top - just not enough! Here is the shot cropped more per your suggestion to the top of the white tree in the background. Thanks for your suggestion.

I like both of these. The cropped version keeps my attention where it should be.

While I like them both I actually prefer the uncropped version. The cropped version makes me feel slightly claustrophobic. Just to be crazy, what about trying a crop of #1, taking out some of the rocks and trees in the right foreground - for me, that's what's drawing my eye away from the path of the creek, not the height at the back. ...just a thought...

Sara - here you go - cropped from the right. I think you are on to something - my eye does follow the river better in this one. However, I had to take out my favorite rocks. Thanks for the suggestion and comment.

Ok, just to drive everyone crazy, here is the original with an oil effect. The frozen trees are a little softer with this effect.

I know, I thought the rocks were interesting too, but sometimes we have to choose which item is more interesting. But I do like this crop the best of the three - of course others will undoubtedly be of other opinions!
