Rainy Day in the Superstitions

Arizona recently got pounded with moisture thanks to El Nino. More than 20" of snow in most of the high country and several inches of rain across most the state. This area of the Superstion Wilderness is usually very dry but the recent rains turned washes into rivers and brought out the deserts color and character.

I really like what you've done here! Both pics are very pleasing. In the BW version, the brightness of the foreground vegetation distracts me. I wonder if it's exposure could be reduced (or the BW conversion formula changed) to bring it down a touch? In any case, great pics and inspiring to me!! Thank you! --Carter

Love the third shot. I prefer the color version of the first two. The B&W seems too foreground heavy. Thanks for the weather story at the beginning -- that really helps when looking at these pics.

Aaron bowdown.gif, great work as per usual and a nice sight for photography! I favor the color vs the B&W in the first set. I want to like the third but the color seems a little heavy on the saturation for me most likely because of the light you were working with on this day. I do like the long exposure choice here!

    Take care,

    Dang good stuff!!

The only comment other than that is on the third image. Try cropping it up from the bottom to just above the rock in the stream.

Thanks David. I appreciate the feedback. It was awesome to be out in these conditions even when they didn't offer any photograph opportunities. It was a cat and mouse game of waiting for conditions to change or bouncing to a different location. I ended up doing a little of both and just enjoyed the day.

Thanks Wayne for the kind words and your thoughts. The third does have a little extra saturation in the greens and yellows but that was to try and balance the colors of the wet rocks in the wash.

Thanks for your thoughts Sam. I played with that a little bit but it throws off the aspect ratio and then I want to take additional crops on the left and right but still can't find a crop I like. I have a few slightly different comps from this area, maybe one of them will work out a little better. Thanks for the thought.

I really like all three pictures and can't add any new comments - the little things I thought of about exposure or crops have all been pointed out by someone else. I admire what you got on a difficult day. Thanks for sharing!

    Cheers, Sara

I keep coming back to this. I spent a rainy morning in the same place a few weeks back and came away with nothing as good as these. It's harder than it looks and you pulled it off quite well.

Thanks Don, I appreciate your comments and understanding of the area. I am going to have to follow you out to the New River area you have been shooting sometime.

I prefer the color versions; especially the first one. I think it shows the desert with elements of mystery, interest and COLOR -- especially during this season which we do not often see. Beautiful!

Your right, this could be a good location for the night sky, it would just depend on how bad the light pollution is as there are a few million people just West of this area.
