Dan is working on it now and plans to publish by the end of the year. He has very high ambitions for it. He sent out a call for digital images to use. I think he might use all new images. CMYK curves for cast removal will probably be replaced, he isn't sure yet by what. I rather suspect it will be as revolutionary when it comes out as the LAB book was. IMO, Dan's writing has become clearer and even more fun to read than when the last PP was written. So I have high hopes all around for this book and plan to take his class again after it is published.

Dan says this will be the last edition of Professional Photoshop. That will be sad if true.
    If not now, when?

Release it when CS3 will be released. At the end of thix year?

Maybe I get the old book anyway. Seems to be a good book.
How is the books spine? Will it be an harsh edge on it while its open? Hate such books. :-)

That depends. If you've read the LAB book, many of the techniques will seem outdated. It's like the simple POP recipies: once you know how to do it in LAB, you'll never waste the time to do it any other way.

On the other hand, the book is full of great stuff that isn't in the LAB book. If you do any B&W conversions, the chapter "Friend and Foe in Black and White" is a must read. The introduction to color correction which stakes out Dan's basic philosophy via pictures of swine is a classic of Western Thought. The chapter about deducing original colors and the implications for cast removal is independent of any technique, really.

It's be a great buy used or remaindered. I have evidence that Dan is making steady progress on the next edition, though.

There is great coverage of CMYK editing in Professional Photoshop. You won't be disappointed if that's what you're after. I owe most of my understanding of CMYK in general to that book.

That's a fine plan. This book (more than the LAB book) is a life's work and the next edition is bound to be very different from the current one. If you are loving what you learned from the LAB book, might as well get on board.

The coverage of CMYK and RGB is very good and will serve you well.

Is this book still valid or is there a newer version? The copyright is 2002.

Professional Photoshop 5th Edition is the most current book from Dan's PP series (2007).
