Joel, great post here. My favorites out of a great set are the first five wave shots. The colors/textures you captured in the water and spray are fabulous. They create a wonderful anticipation of what is about to happen in the next few seconds!
Take care,

Ok, here's the backstory. These were all shot yesterday at Mavericks from my friend Ed's 17' Boston Whaler. Mavericks has the biggest waves on the west coast. It was supposed to be nice day and relatively calm, so we decided to conduct a sea-test of some repairs we'd just completed after an engine fire that we'd suffered the last time we were out. So this was a small wave day. In fact there were only a few surfers out and no other photographers besides us. On a big day, there will be dozens of surfers and photographers out there.
On a big day it looks more like this.
So needless to say it was a real pleasure having the place to ourselves yesterday. Oh, and the newly repaired boat performed perfectly.
These are great! Did the camera get wet? Did you take any special precautions to keep it dry?
Thanks, Sam. When we're motoring out to the site, I always have the camera stowed in a Pelican case to protect it from spray. Once we in position, the camera comes out unprotected. We basically troll around in a circle going as slow as possible, so there's not a lot of spray. But I'm always watching for it.

That's one of my favorites as well. It's a picture-perfect wave, so smooth and drawn out. I'm glad the surfers missed that one.

No 1 certainly shows the power of these waves.
