Is there anyway to create an alternate homepage version and retain the current version so I could return to it at some point in the future?

Sure thing Teetime. You can do this by selecting a new site design. With that, we'll keep your old design saved in case you want to go back for it later on. Have a look here for more info and instructions:

Oliver, that is awesome. One thing is not quite clear to me and i want to verify before I pull the trigger. I think what I can do is:
    1. Select Customize/Choose a new site design
    2. Select my current design (which then makes a copy of my current design)
    3. Modify as needed
    4. Publish

Instead of step 4, is there a way to just save the new design without yet publishing it?

    Sure thing, You can:

    1. Select Customize/Choose a new site design
    2. Select your new design
    3. click "Choose" > "Customize" and make any changes that you want
    4. Click "Done" > "Save for later"

This will set up a new design in your design picker that you can go back to and edit at your leisure.

Theme tab (in customizer), click the wrench for the Active Theme, change the name.
