Reducing the caption block width so it doesn't obscure the image

I've been struggling trying to find a way to prevent the images being obscured by the caption block in full size mode, as can be seen in the example in the screenshot.

It doesn't need to be the width of the page. Surely there must be a way to reduce the size.

It seems like the designers didn't consider how this would be displayed on smaller screens.

So I presume there's no way to do this with CSS code.
