Canon v. Nikon Lens Cost

Lately i've been looking into getting a DSLR. I currently shoot with a Sony DSC W1 (great point and shoot, but I want more). I also have a Canon XT available at times (i'm a yearbook editor) so i've been able to try out a limited selection of cameras. So far i've used Canon Rebel and Rebel XT (and took one shot with a 20D which was the most amazing part of my day) and Nikon film SLRs like the N90. My question is are the Nikon film SLRs similar in feel to the Nikon DSLRs? I've been looking at the Nikon D50 but the only problems I see are one, the memory card it takes. I wish it took a CF but no such luck. Also, the fact that i've heard Canon lenses are generally cheaper and have a wider variety than Nikon does.

So I was wondering if anyone knows which would be better Nikon or Canon (not sure what camera I'd get if I go with Canon, maybe a used 10D?). I have yet to be able to get out to a camera shop to try out the D50 because of all the hours I have to work to be able to afford one :rolleyes plus school gets in the way a bit.

So if anyone could help me out that would be great.

Thanks :D

Ps. Has anyone ever ordered from ritzphoto . com? They have a D50 cheaper than anywhere with free shipping and no tax. Are they reliable?

That's like asking "what's the best religion?" Nobody can really make such a decision for you.. There are pros and cons to both brands.

That said, I have lightly read up on the new Nikon 18-200 VR. That lens looks aweful nice. I wish/hope Canon releases something compeditive w/ it soon.

And I wouldn't sweat the CF/SD thing. In fact I am seriously considering buying a SD->CF adapter and buying nothing but SD from now on. The pocket camera I want (Canon A610) uses SD. .. Why are you so attached to CF? Your Sony took MS anyhow.. didn't it? So you're basically starting clean.

It's not so much that I'm attached to SD (although i've used it with the cannon and like it) it's that i do plan on upgrading when i get the money (yeah, i know getting ahead of myself :P) but if i do invest in a lot of memory and then have to completely switch when upgrading i would end up blowing quite a bit (same reason I haven't invested much in my MS collection).

Yeah, the Nikon vs. Canon thing resembles the homoiousis vs. homoousis debate of the 3rd century. It's quite sectarian. That being said, while I think there is no inherent advantage to the typical nikon setup vs. the typical canon setup (ruling out extreme wides or telephotos) it seems to me that the market for used canon lenses is a little bigger than it is for used nikon lenses.

Buying used lenses from reputable places like Adorama and B&H is a great way to stretch a photography budget, so perhaps there is a slight advantage to canon. Also, to me, the 20d just "feels right." The d70 didn't. So go to a camera store and grope the little puppies. Go with the one your hands like.

Either way you go, your in for an expensive habit. Welcome to the club

    Well said. nod.gif

I was very happy with Canon until I made the jump to a pro-body. Several reasons played in, but right after budget, was how the D2h felt and worked in my hands.

Also, don't forget KEH, they are IMO, better for used than both Adorama and BH.
