Individual user registrations??

I would like to set up some kind of membership site, unfortunately I don't think it can be done using smugmug but before abandoning smugmug for this project I just want to check that I'm not missing somehing.

I want to have individual user accounts (user name & password) and give them access to various albums. Preferable I would like to assign the users to different groups, and give the groups access to the albums. Ideally the users would self register and I would just need approve/deny the registration.

Can this be done in Smugmug?

As far as I can see I can only assign passwords to individual albums.

I don't see a way to set up groups but there is a setting at the gallery and the folder level that allows you to share with "people I choose". Details are on help page Can I share photos privately with only the people I choose?.

A good idea ... that I didn't know of myself. Unfortunately already the 50 people limit limits the usefulness for me ... think "event photography" ... and I don't actually know the people who would be interested in the photos so it's also difficult to for me to register them.

Perhaps I'm approaching this from the wrong way ... and should perhaps rethink it from the beginning.

We do actually have an events feature that lets you suggest or even require registration. Events also include the ability for registered participants to select their favorite images. What you're asking for sounds like a combination of an event and the private sharing feature together. You can submit a feature request here: feedback.smugmug.com if you'd like.

That would probably be a good solution ... unfortunately I can't really justify the business subscription (my lifetime total photo sales is in the range of $40 ).
