I photographed this four days before the male. There were so many insects around that I have still not been able to deal with most of the images.
This one was on the blackcurrant plants in the part of the garden where I first saw the male, before it flew to the Goldenrod.
I got in a bit closer here, although there has been some cropping. The broad bands of yellow markings, diagnostic of the species, are present but, apart from traces, it lacks the additional ones seen in the male.I have been unable to establish whether this is sexual dimorphism or just variation.
