Engine shot, all black, what to do?

There has to be a better way to photograph typical modern all black all plastic engines than this. :(

    Boy, Bill, I share your frustrations. Shooting engines has certainly changed. It's not unusual to see massive engine shrouds that cover the entire engine and most of the accessories. And the huge black plastic pieces are not a photographer's friend. I suppose that the immense after-market for under-hood, dress-up items is a result of owners who also wish to see anything but all that black. Hell...pop the hood on a couple of my cars and you'd think you found one of Blackbeard's treasure chests. Bling, bling, bling.

    Almost makes me want to remove the shrouds just to photograph what is underneath!
