Mini-Challenge #231 ~ Oceans, Lakes, Rivers, Streams

I enjoy photographing water, especially large bodies of water and water flowing in rivers and streams. For this challenge, I'd like to see photos taken by streams, rivers, lakes, or oceans. (Bays, gulfs, straits, and such are also welcome. In past mini challenges we have focused on water, fountains, and water reflections so I wanted to take this another direction while keeping it broad enough to encourage lots of participation.) The body of water can be the setting or the focus of your photo.

I had several more creative ideas in mind but wanted to post this challenge quickly since I'm heading out of town for a few days. (I didn't have time to find and post examples for the other themes just now.)

Looking forward to seeing your photos!

This Mini will run for two weeks; from today, Thursday, August 4th, 2016 to Thursday, August 18th, 2016 at 11 pm EST.

Usual Stuff:
################################################################
OUR UN-OFFICIAL GENERAL RULES
1. Have fun sharing and seeing what others share!
2. The host supplies a topic and YOU POST 1-3 IMAGES. The host judges the winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and is not eligible to enter. The 1st place winner becomes the next host, chooses the next topic and becomes the next judge.
3. Any photo you’ve taken is eligible, regardless of when taken or camera used.
4. Any amount of post-processing is allowed. However, it is helpful if you list your camera and lens along with your photo.
5. You may comment on other contestant's images. If you want someone to leave you some critique or criticism, just ask within your post.
6. The winner has up to three days (72 hours) to begin a new mini-challenge, or the honor goes to the #2 finisher and so forth.

Guidelines:
1. Enter 1-3 photos and put them in a single post.
2. Either embed your image in the thread or, if you must, supply a link to it. Keep in mind, however, most people don't want to click to open photos hosted elsewhere (i.e. on your website).
3. Also try and re-size your photos prior to posting so they're sized appropriately for viewing without having to scroll (~800 pixels on the longest side works best.)
4. Give each image you enter a title.
5. Enjoy discussion with members about their images, don't let this just be an entry thread!
6. When quoting a post, change the IMG urls to a 200x200 size picture so it is clear your post is feedback and not another entry. (See here for help).
7. Don't be hesitant; share 'em and enter!

Mini-Challenge pointers:
1. Upon winning a mini-challenge round, your first step is coming up with a new theme and starting a new thread using the same format as others have used.
2. Make sure to notify the admin of this thread to update the main thread links with your entry thread.
3. Feel free to watch the thread as it grows or wait to the end time and look at all the entries all at once.
4. After the time/date has passed, then officially close the thread with a single post notifying everyone of the fact.
5. After you're finished judging, start a new thread (again using the prior formats) and post your Winner and runners-up. It is important to have runners up in case the winner does not show within the 72-hour window.
6. PM the winner with this info above and let them know they have 72 hours to set up the next mini-challenge.
7. If the winner does not show/start the next mini-challenge after 72 hours, notify the next runner-up and post a message on the Winner thread of the fact.
8. Remember, if you're the Winner, you run the next mini challenge!

Since so many of our vacation bike tours take place while riding along rivers I have decided to limit my choice to pictures of rivers. I've selected three of my favorites.

    1) The river Lot (SW France) and the town of Puy-l'Évêque

    20120820_001_DMC-G1-X2.jpg

    2) The Loire river at Candes-St.-Martin

    3) The Sile river near the town of Casale Sul Sile, Italy (Province of Veneto)

Great subject. Here are my three entries:

    1) How about a Spring? This is Fern Spring in Yosemite National Park. I can't help myself but stop each time I'm in the park to get another shot of Fern Spring.

    IMG_0509%20adj%20then%20topaz%20clarity%20BW%20signed-X2.jpg

    2) But then I have to post a color shot of Fern Spring too :D

    IMG_3704%20Cropped%20topaz-X2.jpg

    3) And then on the Calif. Coast - a misty Morro Rock.

Since we cruise and sail, this was really difficult for me to figure out what 3 things to pick. I wanted to post a photo of the glassy swells in the Gulf Stream that reflect the sky, with an occasional flying fish jumping out, but apparently I did not take any photos of that and the image is only in my mind. So back to the drawing board. I found that most of my photos of water rely on the sky for effect. So I eliminated all those and also the photos that were of something and the water was incidental. I wanted an old pre-digitial photo, so I picked this one

    1. Mediterranean - 1964

    tHCkfKHDeT8nNhqck5Gi_7EsqhZtXj-oVqske_pz3UIoKs7LZFArmr9Kq-qta4JA6EB56xquCu0EDjc=w4519-h2542-no

which was taken from a tour bus someplace along the Amalfi Drive in Italy

Second I wanted a photo of the water where the water itself was unusual.

    2. Steaming Atlantic

    FU3SjoJpuGu1JovlJJpVQc6hA05PgPJopoq62ZsIMPYgLHCZ37N2CddHUhH2ifBrFCOyBjIaCMuIpG8=w4519-h2542-no

This is the Atlantic where the warm Gulf Stream meets the cold air off Cape Hatteras - Taken in January 2011

    3. Boiling Caribbean

    p9uXyiZg-UsH0AjBLKN3mEEOgbOtB_EKVT91UEXHSWvG-AWdoAPn5W3_Ftxf4k5WLk_kAKhz4AU10Q0=w4519-h2542-no

Pyroclastic flow coming down the slopes of Montserrat is boiling the Caribbean at the edge of the island. (We were in a helicopter)

Great subject Gretchen, and very good entries so far.

I have so many wide water scenes on my hard drive and didn't want to choose. Since we visited the Belgian coast for a few days over the last weekend I decided I would only use shots from these 4 days as my submission. Call me lazy for not wanting to plough through my hard drive, but it gives a special mood for shooting when you have a mini challenge like this one in mind.

    So here they come

This is how the Big challenges used to be - all the photos had to be fresh taken in the 2 week period of challenge - it was a lot of fun :)

... but I also like these Mini's which make us dig into the archives and revise older photos and memories... :)

GrandmaR, I am curious about the year this photo was taken? My husband and I traveled to Montserrat in 1978 before the volcano became active.
