This plant was supplied (1970s) as Opuntia lusista cristata*, the original label being still present and legible.

I cannot find any trace of a name “lusista” for an Opuntia or Tephrocactus (a subgenus of Opuntia), this being the latter.

All current references to the Boxing Glove Cactus are under Opuntia fulgida Engelm. var. mamillata forma monstrosa*. (There is no room on the label for all that! )

*A crested form “cristata” grows along a single line, which may be twisted. A monstrose form “monstrosa” grows in a confused looking manner. Thus, this is a monstrose form, not a cristate one.

This individual plant is very slow growing, although it forms huge thickets in habitat. This stem is 40mm wide.

The stereo is crosseye.
