Safflower, Carthamus tinctorius, is a crop of significant and diverse importance, for its oil, as a source bird seed and animal feed and much more besides, including medicinal uses. I received a free gift of seeds with a flower seed order. These plants reached grew to only about 25cm high (due to late sowing) but would normally reach 150cm. The flower can be yellow, orange or red.
The shots of the open flower are at an angle to hide a damaged leaf, a problem with all three available plants. The bud measures ca 20mm at its widest part.
