menu help

Hi I have a problem with my custom menu at the moment. When you resize a window the menu gets partially moved down onto a new line (which looks ugly). I want to switch to my mobile view (vertical) when it gets to 800px.

Any help appreciated.

Before adding code, have you considered shortening some of the entries in your menu?

I would change "contact me" to "contact".

Is the login link for you or for your clients? If it's just for you, remove the menu entry. You can log in at www.smugmug.com, then go to your site where you will show as logged in.

Hi I prefer 'contact me' and I sometimes use the facility that needs clients to login.

Denise did you know that the menu text on your website has a line above it when you click on it and will sometimes not have it - great photos by the way.

Yes, there is a line above the menu entry when you hover over it. I have some CSS in my theme that does that. I can't pull it up for you right now because SmugMug is currently in read-only mode. If you're interested in the CSS I can post it later.

The post Change Features for Mobile or Tablet Browsers shows how to target specific screen sizes.

Unfortunately I don't know the code to switch the menu to mobile view - hopefully someone from smug will jump in with that part of the answer.

The tru mobile view for the menu kicks in at 670px (if I ma not mistaken) and not at 800px. You cannot change that trigger point. I can suggest something in line with what Denise suggested: as you approach 800px make the font smaller and padding shorter.

The alternative is a bit more complicated. Have another menu - vertical - that is hidden on larger screens. Show it as you hit 800pt and hide the regular one. But then you have to decide what you want to do when you eventually approach 670px. So... it's messy.
