Put an active link in the caption area

I thought I saw a discussion on the way to put a link in the caption, but I haven't found the right search terms to find it again. It may have been for the old Smugmug.
I have a situation where in a folder I want to put two photos vertically in one column and I wanted to assign a URL for the click action. It won't let me do that with two photos. So I thought I could simply put the link in the caption, but that doesn't seem to work.
I tried using the standard HTML <A> syntax and the link text shows up, but the link doesn't work.
Any suggestions?
(This wouldn't be an issue if smugmug allowed stacking content by column instead of forcing each row to be no more than the height of the longest one.)

Where have you placed the <a href statement where it doesn't work?
What syntax are you using?

Photos can be used for backgrounds though.

Two single photo blocks maybe?
My experience is that links in captions work in some settings and not others. In galleries, they work in the lightbox. They work in Smugmug and Journal gallery displays. Links do not work in collage landscape, collage portrait, and thumbnail display captions.
I posted a request at http://feedback.smugmug.com/forums/17723-smugmug/suggestions/6879791-enable-html-tags-in-captions-for-the-collage-lands but it hasn't gone anywhere.
Added note: See also http://dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=249671 It's about 2 years old (and the example I posted is now gone), but the situation is unchanged.
I did further testing and found the same thing -- links in the captions work in some settings and not in others. Also, I didn't see the link itself being marked as a link (standard blue), rather the whole caption area becomes "live."
Two single photo blocks would be great, since then I can associate the link to the image click; but the multiple photos block does not allow a custom URL for image click.
The single most frustrating aspect of using Smugmug for me is the limitation of one block per column per row. Right up there in frustration is not being allowed to use iframes. On the other hand, I have no plans to jump ship as the alternatives also have their problems as well and I've a lot of photos on SM.
I revised the folder in question, and I'm reasonably sure my users (all two of them) will have no problems finding the links to the spreadsheets I'd like them to check out. In an iframe world, I could simply embed the spreadsheet, at least in theory.
The folder I'm working on is http://www.redwoodtwig.com/Art/Writing/The-Perfectly-Balanced-Path.
The best solution for me would be a layout feature that allows me to stack multiple content blocks in a column lined up with a single content block in an adjacent column. The ideal solution would be to revamp the journal so that I can mix and match text and photos similar to the way most word processors and blogging sites allow -- In a journal gallery, for each photo have a set of menus and options that include things like where and how to display the caption, additional text, inline photo placement or wrap around text, etc. In other words, in a journal gallery style, the text has priority over the image.
